Sewer backups come from what is considered a grossly contaminated source, and can carry pathogenic (disease causing) agents. In the example above our source of Category 3 water came from a toilet discharge. This happens when water originates from beyond the toilet trap, and comes from the sewer or septic system. Many procedures are necessary to address cleanliness and safety when dealing with Category 3 water intrusions. Worker and occupant health and safety are the first propriety on every Category 3 project. Areas affected by the water intrusion are marked and posted as potentially hazardous.
